5G-Enabled UAV Solutions for Disaster Management and Emergency Communications

Researchers at the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Yıldız Technical University have developed an innovative UAV-assisted communication architecture designed to ensure the continuity of communication services when conventional infrastructure is damaged during natural disasters. Supported by the TÜBİTAK 3501 Career Development Program, the project proposes the deployment of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as mobile base stations during emergencies such as earthquakes, floods, and wildfires. Integrated with 5G and beyond (B5G) technologies, the system is designed to provide low-latency data transmission, real-time location tracking, and uninterrupted connectivity in disaster-affected areas. By rapidly restoring communication networks, the proposed solution aims to accelerate search-and-rescue operations, enhance situational awareness, and minimize critical communication disruptions during crisis response efforts.
