The “Goodness in the City” themed Esenlik Symposium, organized in collaboration with Esenler Municipality and Yildiz Technical University, focused on innovative and ethical solutions to the social, environmental, and technological challenges faced by cities. YTU Rector Prof. Dr. Eyüp Debik emphasized that major metropolises like Istanbul struggle with traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and infrastructure deficiencies, and highlighted the importance of preserving ethical values while utilizing modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and innovation. Key environmental sustainability proposals at the symposium included promoting circular economy models in waste management, developing AI-based traffic management systems, and integrating smart city approaches into urban transformation projects. Viewing Istanbul as a “living laboratory” presents a unique opportunity for collaboration between universities, local governments, and communities to generate scientific solutions addressing urban environmental issues and advancing sustainable city futures.
