Prof. Dr. Sezgin Bakırdere, faculty member at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Yıldız Technical University, has been awarded support under the TÜBİTAK KUTUP-1001 Program for his project titled “Accurate and Sensitive Determination of Inorganic and Organic Pollutants at Trace Levels in Penguin/Seal Excrement and Ocean Water Samples from the Antarctic Region.”

Within the scope of the 9th National Antarctic Scientific Expedition, the project aims to develop eco-friendly, low-cost, and easily applicable analytical methods for the detection of targeted inorganic and organic pollutants in lake/ocean water and penguin/seal excrement samples collected from the Antarctic region.

The study will enable the high-precision identification and quantification of persistent organic and inorganic pollutants, offering valuable insights into the current state of environmental pollution in one of the most sensitive ecosystems on Earth. The outcomes of this research will contribute to global efforts to monitor and mitigate the impacts of anthropogenic pollution on polar regions.
