Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer Said Toker, from the Department of Food Engineering, Faculty of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at Yildiz Technical University (YTU), leads a research project titled “Modification of Microalgae Proteins as a Sustainable Source: Using Smart PBR Cultivation Methods and Simulated Doha Sea Water Conditions.”
The project, supported under the TÜBİTAK – Qatar Research Development and Innovation Council (QRDI) Bilateral Cooperation Programme, focuses on developing sustainable food sources from marine microalgae while ensuring environmental preservation. By cultivating algae under controlled seawater conditions and employing smart photobioreactor (PBR) systems, the research contributes to:
• The sustainable utilization of aquatic ecosystems,
• Reducing pressure on conventional marine resources, and
• Enhancing biodiversity-friendly food production methods.
This initiative represents YTU’s active engagement in international research collaborations to promote sustainable blue biotechnology, combining marine science, food technology, and climate adaptation goals.
