Colour Preferences in Architectural Design Studios

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effects of different colours (as design elements of architectural composition) on subjects chosen from students of architecture. The experiment was carried out by painting the wall surface surrounding the blackboard of a studio the students were in constant interaction with. The first part of this study was completed as a pre-experiment using monochromatic and 4 intermediate (two hues) colour from NCS together with neutral colours. In the second part of the experiment same colours were blended with 50% white, black and grey. Thus, evaluation was made for the total 34 colours by using the Semantic Differential Method. The results of the evaluation was tested by the Arithmetic Mean and Factor Analysis and the scores for each colour was determined as answer to the questions such as; which are the most pleasant and positive colours? What is the effect of colour on work productivity? What is the preference rating of the blended colours and how do they effect the perception in space?
