Abstract

Corpus linguistics and specifically collocations have been incremental in recent years. However, more specific studies need to be emphasized in this field. Study on collocations has enabled linguistic and cognitive linguistic research to be on a continuum. Thus, collocations were initially related to merely lexis. However, recent investigation has emphasized the importance of grammar as well by developing a new term called collostructions. These collostructions refer to both lexis and grammar. Thus, universal grammar has been criticized since it has often focused on syntax by disregarding lexis. Since corpus-based and collocation-oriented projects have been accruing lately, the theory and paradigm of universal grammar has also started to question itself which has resulted in minimalistic program. In this study, the collocations and collocates that the verbs take were analyzed. The study was composed of 120 research articles from 20 journals of physical and social sciences. Two important software programs, Antconc and Wordsmith, were used to observe the frequency of the collocations that overlap with each other. The study also found the collocations that were used differently in two distinct sciences. The study found 140 common verbs. It can be said that there was a significant difference between the two academic disciplines.
