Abstract
Teacher unions are professional organizations established to improve and protect the economic and cultural living conditions of employees. Education unions are non-governmental organizations that play a role in various fields such as improving the social and economic conditions of education workers and the teaching-learning environment and developing education policies. It has been stated in many studies in the literature that unions have roles in the selection of school administrators and that they are one of the effective pressure groups. The aim of this article is to evaluate the views of school administrators regarding the role of unions in the selection of education administrators. For this purpose, 16 school administrators who are members of the four biggest teacher unions of Turkey operating in the education sector were interviewed. Permission was obtained from Yıldız Technical University Ethics Committee for the study with decision number 2020/4 on 19.06.2020. Participants were determined using purposeful sampling method. The data in the study were collected using a semi-structured interview form. Content analysis method was used in the analysis of the data. According to the results obtained within the scope of the research, it was reached that school administrators think that unions effect the selection process of education administrators. While some of the school administrators think that the unions affect the choice of school administrators in a positive sense, some of them think that they have negative effects. In addition, most of the education administrators evaluated that unions do not impact on the development of educational policies for the selection of school administrators, but they should have more active roles in this process.
