Abstract
Recently, the fast increase in the cost of energy and the decrease in the used economic fossil fuel reserves cause an increase in the interest to the energy production from wastes using anaerobic biotechnology (Speece, 1996). The anaerobic treatment is defined as the biological separation of organic wastes in anaerobic conditions and also the production of their last products, such as CH4, CO2, NH3, and H2S (biogas). The processes, employed by anaerobic bacteria, have been widely used in treatment of municipal wastewaters and varying types of industrial wastewaters for removal of organic material in the wastewaters and also produce biogas as energy from the wastewaters. Treatment capacity of an anaerobic digestion system is primarily determined by the amount of active microorganism population retained within the system dependent on wastewater composition, system configuration and operation of anaerobic reactor (Zainol et al., 2009).
