Geography in the 5th Grade Social Studies Textbook in Terms of Subject Content and Learning Activities

Abstract

Social studies; It is a multidisciplinary field of study, which includes many social sciences such as history, geography, sociology, psychology, and art history are melted in one pot. This field of study has been included as a social studies course in primary and secondary education since 1968. The books which are used in the courses are supplementary course materials approved by the Ministry of National Education. Textbooks are very important materials in terms of covering orderly what teachers tell, completing what they tell verbally and overcoming learning weaknesses and being a resource that students always have at hand.In this study, the 5th Grade Social Studies Textbook of Şahin (2018), one of the x number of textbooks prepared according to the 2018 curriculum and approved by the Ministry of National Education, was subjected to content analysis in terms of geography subjects. Geography curriculum and methods used in the transfer of topics in the learning areas were discussed with a critical perspective. Document analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. According to the findings obtained; It has been observed that there are sufficient numbers of learning activities within the scope of geography subjects in the area of People Places and Environments, Production, Distribution and Consumption, Global Connections. It has been determined that the images and content of the events used in the activities are suitable for the achievements. However, it has been determined that the activities of establishing relationships between the contents in mind maps, cartoons, photographs and texts are not sufficiently included.
