Inorganic Polymers as Flame‐Retardant Materials

Abstract

Inorganic polymers are fascinating groups of macromolecules, which have intrinsically high-temperature stability and flame retardancy in comparison with common polymers. Such characters of inorganic polymers enable them to be applied in the form of flame-retardant materials in a variety of high-performance applications. The properties of these types of polymers are tuned by varying the chemical composition of inorganic elements such as silicon, phosphorus, boron, and nitrogen into the side branch or backbone of inorganic polymers. Typical examples of inorganic polymers (polysiloxanes, polyphosphazenes, polysilanes, carborane-containing polymers, etc.) and their thermal and flame-retardant properties have been comprehensively introduced in this chapter.
