Abstract
Speaking skills are crucial for effective communication and overall language proficiency, making them a key focus in language learning. Yet many students find speaking in a foreign language quite challenging. Research underscores the influence of affective factors on language acquisition, with anxiety emerging as a major barrier to effective speaking. Anxiety can either diminish learning effectiveness or the right amount can catalyze commitment and investment in linguistic proficiency. Some causes of speaking anxiety include personal factors, teaching methodologies, learners' beliefs, and evaluation procedures. This chapter delves into these causes and offers practical strategies to mitigate speaking anxiety, including teacher-implemented and student-centered strategies. By implementing these strategies, educators can create a supportive environment, enhance student participation, and improve linguistic proficiency. Understanding and addressing speaking anxiety leads to a more inclusive and effective language learning experience.
