Postmodern Düşüncenin Mekan Açılımı Üzerine Kavramsal Bir Deneme: Arada Mekan

Abstract

While the claims of entireness and transcendency of modernity are giving their places to the idea that the objects do not have fixed positions on earth, they also bring out fundamental changes in ways of knowing and grasping the world. In this process, new circumstances are called forth, in which the idea of space is also being transformed, starting to break up with the topologies to which it belongs. The modern space, expected to form ties with the rational, ethical and mechanical opens up into immanence, discontinuity and randomness. This new circumstance is born among the dualities of modern thinking. Throughout the examination conducted in the text the space, which comes out between the meanings that have been scattered after the break in the dualities of the modernity thinking, has been called ‘in-between space’, and it is aimed to put forth the complex nature of the in-between space, to reveal the meanings in it and to examine this space which itself is the tension and the contradiction. The question of the study can be expressed as follows: How can in-between space be represented, despite the fact that the spatial pattern of modern dualism has a functional rigid frame and ideal form? Methodologically, examination of the “in-between space” is made over two spatial discourses. These discourses are the “Smooth Space” of Gilles Deleuze-Felix Guattari and “Heterotopia” of Michel Foucault, in the order in which they are discussed in the text. This study which is interested in dealing with unfolding the ability of transformation, formation and randomness of the space is in the effort for revealing the post-modern space over its non-actualized potentials. In-between space represents a fight that is started within the dualities of modernity, although it is not an exogenous entity that can be physically traced, it can be conceptually opened up.
