Abstract
The selection of surface plays a vital role in enhancing the visual impact and expressiveness of photographs throughout the history of photography. Photographic artists use a variety of surfaces, chosen based on their aesthetic and technical preferences, as tools to amplify the expressive power of their works. Each selected surface is an important tool in conveying the story behind the photograph and in establishing a connection with the audience. When the photographic surface and the meaning of the photograph support each other, it increases the photograph's expressive power. Using glass can enhance this effect through its smooth and reflective properties, adding originality and creating a sense of depth. Despite the challenges and variables involved in the application process, the result should accurately convey the meaning of the photograph, enhancing the work and increasing its expressive power.Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process discovered by Sir John Frederick William Herschel in 1842. It involves a manual application process that allows artists to play an active role at every stage of work production, offering a wide range of surfaces. Due to its accessibility, ease of use, and the ability to produce vibrant colors on various mediums, Cyanotype has become a popular alternative photographic process to traditional silver prints.Glass surfaces are unique due to their colorless and textureless structure, allowing for photographic prints with more striking tones compared to other surface applications. In this article, we will discuss the application of the cyanotype photographic processes on glass surfaces, analyze the encountered problems, and explain the final result. The relationship between printing processes, surface choices, and the work is exemplified through the 'Mirror' photography series.Cyanotype, one of the 19th century photographic printing techniques, was an alternative to the conventional silver-containing prints. Cyanotype, which requires manual application, is a popular alternative photographic printing technique that has survived to the present day with its ease of application, the resulting print colour and the variety of applicable surfaces. When applied on glass, much more striking tones are obtained compared to paper applications since the colour does not lose its vibrancy. In this article, Cyanotype printing technique is explained in terms of a glass surface. The errors encountered during the application are made references to while the final result is explained in great detail. In terms of the printing technique and surface selection / artefact relationship, it is supported and illustrated using the "Mirror" project.
