The Perception of Computational Productivity Among Students in Higher Education

Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) is a fundamental competency of the contemporary period, significantly influencing both personal and professional capabilities. In this context, individuals possessing CT talents are anticipated to cultivate abilities in the productive use of information and communication technologies, information processing and dissemination, and product development via digital media. Consequently, it is essential for humans to be both computational thinkers and computational producers. The assessment of this talent, referred to as computational productivity (CP), emerges as a significant study topic. Despite the existence of numerous instruments in the literature for assessing the perception of critical thinking skills, no measurement tool has been established to evaluate creative problem-solving as an emerging notion. This study aims to create a valid and accurate scale for assessing university students' perceptions of computing productivity. The exploratory component analysis revealed that the 40-item scale was categorized into five factors: Productivity in Programming and Algorithms, Productivity in Product Development, Digital Productivity, Productivity in Problem Solving, and Productivity in Collaboration. Furthermore, seven questions were eliminated from the scale following confirmatory factor analysis, resulting in a final version of 33 items. The adjusted item-total score correlation values for the variables varied from 0.671 to 0.878, whilst the Cronbach Alpha coefficients ranged from 0.895 to 0.953. The results demonstrate that the scale possesses a high degree of validity and reliability.
