Theoretical Investigation of Point Contact for Ball Bearings Application

Mehmet Bozca YTU

Abstract

Abstract Purpose of this study is theoretical investigation of point contact case for ball bearings application. For this purpose, average contact pressure p avg , maximum contact pressure p max is calculated for applied force F. Contact stress is calculated according to the Von Mises Effective Stress Hypothesis. Both maximum contact pressure p max and Von Mises effective stress σ VM are simulated with respect to varying diameter of ball element and varying elasticity modulus of ball element. It was concluded that increasing of ball element diameter results in reducing maximum contact pressure p max and effective stress σ VM . Furthermore, increasing of elasticity modulus of ball element results in increasing maximum contact pressure p max and effective stress σ VM , because of decreasing of contact area. Keywords: Ball bearings, Point contact, Contact pressure, Effective stress.
