Abstract
This entry mainly focuses on the historical overview of the status of English as a foreign language, and its impact on various domains of language use in Turkey – an Expanding Circle context. The (un)planned spread of English in Turkey is presented along a timeline from the late nineteenth century, the Ottoman Period, to the present‐day status of English in the Turkish Republic in relation to social, political, and commercial factors. It is divided into three sections: the status of English covering the periods before and after the foundation of the Turkish Republic, English in the Turkish education system – both K‐12 and higher education – and English in the linguistic landscape in urban settings. The entry concludes with the current challenges resulting from the mismatch between the global spread of English and its local impact from a sociolinguistic point of view.
