Abstract
Turks and Arabs have interacted throughout history in terms of Turkish and Arabic borrowed words and grammatical definitions. This study focuses on the difficulties Arabic students may encounter in their Turkish lessons and the teaching of many common words with the same pronunciation but different meanings in two languages. Some of these words are "time, person, sentence, hour, etc." It is used in the same sense in both languages as in the examples. Some of them, "body, availability, art, price, etc." As such, it varies in terms of meaning and usage. In this study, the set of "Istanbul Turkish for Foreigners" (2019), one of the most used textbooks in teaching Turkish to foreigners, was used as a data source. The words of Arabic origin in A1 and A2 levels were examined in terms of false friends that constitute the study's theoretical framework. The researchers handled a survey conducted with the qualitative research method according to the document review. They translated qualitative data into word lists and evaluated these data were with descriptive analysis. The total numbers and repetition frequencies of the words of Arabic origin were determined. As a result of the examinations, the total number of Arabic-origin words at the A1 level was 533; the misleading equivalent was 25; A total of 579 words of Arabic origin and 55 false friend's words were determined at A2 level. The total number of Arabic-origin words obtained at all levels is 1112, and the misleading equivalent is 80. The false friend situation was classified and interpreted according to these words' meanings through descriptive analysis by taking the opinions of an Arabic expert. The identifying and explaining false friends in the "Istanbul Turkish for Foreigners" course and workbooks would represent support material for teachers in vocabulary teaching to Arabic students. Simultaneously, the instructors should pay attention to their language of instruction used in foreign language teaching.
